PROFIBUS ACTIVE TERMINATION

What is PROFIBUS Termination?

Largest PROFIBUS setup possible is 127 devices (124 practically due to address limitations).
Anyhow, these 127 devices cannot be connected all together because of the parallel resistors of these devices. That’s why, the PROFIBUS network is needed to be divided into segments (with 32 devices Max. per segment).

This separation can be done with repeaters.

Termination is normally done by a terminating switch on the connector or the component itself.

Switching ON the termination by itself is not enough, it must be also POWERED.

The end termination in a PROFIBUS segment should be consisted of 3 resistors, 220 Ω coming from switching ON the terminating switch + Two 390 Ω resistors provided by device which the cable is connected to.

2- What will happen if end termination lost?

Losing the power from the device in one of the ends causes loss of the termination.
(For example if the last device was removed for maintenance)

And losing the end termination means losing the communication in the whole segment

3- Active Termination components

Active Termination components can be connected at the ends of the segments to provide permanent termination.

Some of the benefits here are:

  • Any device can be removed for maintenance without the fear of losing the termination.
  • It will take out the confusion of the termination switches especially with the lack of knowledge or diagram missing.

4- PROCENTEC Active Terminator (Terminator T1):

This component enables you to switch off or remove the last devices on a segment without disturbing the bus communication. This way you reduce the risk of faults and thus potential downtime.

  • It has a redundant Power supply for the highest availability
  • On-board DB9 connector to connect the diagnostic tools.

5- PROCENTEC Active Terminator (Terminator T1 Pepper):

The T1-Pepper provides customizable (active) termination for PROFIBUS segments that do not comply with the standard RS 485 impedance. With rotary switches the impedance of the termination can be set.

what_is_profibus10

There are PROFIBUS networks that are not connected with standard RS-485 cables. With the 2 rotary switches on the Terminator, it is possible to adjust the impedance to male it equal to standard PROFIBUS.

Some other applications or benefits of this terminator are:

  • PRFOIBUS communication over non-standard cable
  • If the idle voltage of a PROFIBUS communication gets low because of a high EMC environment, it can increase it to keep the network running
  • If a standard RS-485 segment has a poor impedance it can also increase it.
